Mind Business Consultancy - Managing change through people - organisations and individuals

Mind Business Consultancy Services
Personal, Professional & Business change:

Personal change
Specialising in complex trauma and related difficulties, I am EMDR trained. Since 1981, I have developed a range of skills that assist those with legacies of trauma - as individuals and their support people and the impact of this work on professionals working in the mental health field.

I began my career in grief counselling then couple and family work and over time I became specialised in working with the effects of abuse and trauma.  This can include difficulties in handling emotions, mood, anxiety, sleep, sexuality issues, relationships, self-harm, eating and other addictions.  I have worked for many years with people who struggle with dissociation and self-harm which can be part of a number of the ongoing effects of trauma.

These difficulties have an impact on families and whanau and on the very health services that seek to be of help. My leadership experience in organisations and managing services has enhanced my understanding of health systems and how they can be more effectively developed to support clients and staff in this challenging work.
Trauma-informed care requires a whole-system approach to be consistently effective for the clients, their whanau and the staff.

Training for group based psycho-educational therapeutic courses for clients
I have designed the Alternatives to Self Harm© program for groups and I offer related training for professionals. The ASH© program is offered in a 12 week and a 20 week follow up support group, called PHOENIX©.
Trials in the UK and in NZ indicate ASH offers sustainable coping skills and choice for people who previously thought self-harm was their only option to relieve their distress. Through ASH they discover they can meet their needs with more effective and more helpful strategies and skills.
Training is offered for  professionals to use this program in a range of settings (it was developed based on forensic, mental health, primary care and educational settings) and can be adapted accordingly.

International and bi-cultural links
ASH & STEPPS compliment each other and international presentations from 2012 to date have drawn a wide interest.  In collaboration with Nancee Blum and colleagues  in Iowa USA, work progresses for delivering their STEPPS program as STEPPS-NZ with other colleagues in New Zealand.

Both STEPPS-NZ and ASH are envisaged as being developed as bi-cultural programs based on Maori principles of health and wellbeing.  I welcome enquiries from Maori professionals to work with me to bring this to fruition!

Systems Training and Emotional Predictability and Problem Solving  (STEPPS) is designed for working with people with emotional intensity difficulties and is a 20-week program with an optional follow up program called STAIRWAYS. It works well as it involves the support people and whanau and is now recognised as part of the evidence base (and is easier for all staff to learn if not trained in DBT).  A follow up self-help support program for ASH called PHOENIX is also available.  See also my chapter in the recently published book edited by Don Black and Nancee Blum: Implementing STEPPS around the globe.

Approaches I use:
I have training in Narrative therapy, Mindfulness, Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, Dialectical Behaviour Therapy, Transactional Analysis, Solution Focused and EMDR as options available tailored to the needs.

I am also trained in management and in particular I have a depth of experience  and demonstrated skills in leading services through change processes and in strategic development.

Professional consultation
Supervision, mentoring and inspirational training programs supporting professionals in the delivery of quality clinical practice is a particular interest of mine. Training can be delivered in your workplace with supervision individually or in a group and Skype supervision is also available.

See the Current training/groups page for upcoming training workshops or contact me about coming to your location to deliver training.

Fees
NZ $150 plus GST payable per hourly session (this has not changed since 2012)!

Funding sources: PHO Mental Health Initiative, WINZ, ACC and some insurances.

My training day fee is $1500-$2000 plus GST and expenses depending on the requirements (lower end of scale for ready-made training and higher for specially tailored). Bringing me to you is usually more cost-effective compared to sending staff to events outside your area.

ASH/APEX Leaders Guide is being developed as a resource for professionals.  Follow up support and training can also be provided.  Put your details on the General Enquiries page to register your interest in finding out more about how to purchase when published.

  • Strategic planning and consultations for service redesign.
  • Supporting, mentoring  and developing staff through change.
  • Facilitating team away days and team development.
  • Leadership development and performance management.
  • LEAN thinking translated into practice (reduce duplication and waste and optimise performance from your team and processes).
  • Creating good clinical service management - how to join up the dots so that clients, clinicians and managers all achieve their goals
Stress, anxiety and adjustment difficulties can arise during workplace change. I offer the know-how from my clinical training and experience and combine this with my extensive leadership experience and systems and organisational skills to help you and your staff with these issues.

I have redesigned as well as managed services so that what at first seemed a chaotic lack of consistency resulted in a more  coordinated, systematic, easily understood and clinically appropriate way or working - managers, staff and clients all appreciating the difference!
